Short Description

The Winchester Mystery House is a sprawling Victorian mansion known for its unusual architecture, decades of continuous construction, stairways leading nowhere, doors opening into walls, and enduring stories of paranormal activity. Once the home of Sarah Winchester, the property has become one of the most recognizable haunted attractions in the United States.

History

Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester was the widow of William Wirt Winchester and inherited a large portion of the Winchester firearms fortune after his death. Following the deaths of her infant daughter and husband, Sarah moved from Connecticut to California and purchased an eight-room farmhouse in San Jose.

Between approximately 1886 and Sarah’s death in 1922, the farmhouse expanded into an enormous mansion containing roughly 160 rooms, 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, 47 stairways and fireplaces, 17 chimneys, 13 bathrooms, and six kitchens. Construction continued for decades, creating a complicated layout filled with unusual architectural features.

Legends claim that Sarah consulted a spiritualist who told her she was being pursued by the spirits of people killed by Winchester firearms and that she must continuously build to appease or confuse them. The spiritualist story remains part of the mansion’s folklore, although Sarah’s actual motivations may also have involved grief, architectural interest, employment for local workers, and personal privacy.

The mansion opened to the public in 1923 and has since become a historic landmark and major visitor attraction.
